Grade 2 – Minor Scales

There are two types of minor scales which you will encounter in ABRSM music theory exams: Harmonic Minor and Melodic Minor. At grade 2 you may choose which of these forms of the minor scale you study.

We recommend that grade 2 students study the simpler of the two forms, the Harmonic Minor, leaving the more complicated Melodic Minor until grade 3.

You will need to watch 3 videos to help you understand Harmonic Minor scales. Yes, three. Sorry! It is important, however, that you are already confident in being able to create and use the Circle of Fifths. If you need to, take a look at the Major Scales section of the grade 2 videos to help you with this.
