Grade 5 – Inversions

At grade 5 you will be expected to be able to identify and draw chords that are not in root position i.e. the root note may not be the note in the bass of the chord. The video entitled ‘Inversions’ demonstrates how to label and identify inversions.

You may also like to learn about another method of expressing inversions; Figured Bass. At grade 5 you have the option of using either system e.g. the system detailed in ‘Inversions’ i.e. using ‘a’, ‘b’ or ‘c’, or you may use figured bass. If you plan on further music study beyond grade 5 such as GCSE, A Level or University then MusicTheoryVideos strongly recommends that you also familiarise yourself with the Figured Bass system as well.
