Grade 4 – Brass

All instruments in this family have their sound produced by blowing into an instrument made of metal. You may often hear brass players referring to ‘buzzing’ into their mouthpiece – this is the technique used by brass players when blowing into their instrument.

Typical orchestral instruments include (from highest in pitch to the lowest):

  • Trumpet
  • Horn (more commonly known as French Horn)
  • Trombone
  • Tuba

Brass instruments can only produce one note at a time.

Clefs used by brass instruments:

  • Trumpet – Treble clef
  • Horn – Treble clef (sometimes bass clef)
  • Trombone – Bass clef (sometimes tenor clef)
  • Tuba – Bass clef
